DAYTONA BEACH, Fla.- It didn't take long after launch for the Florida SouthWestern State Buccaneers to put themselves on the national radar, courtesy of today's 'On This Date in FSW History' entry; the Bucs knocking off their first ranked opponent in program history.
Just three days after the opening game of their inaugural season, the FSW Buccaneers were set for the biggest test of their early season schedule as they squared off with 12th ranked Daytona State. The young Bucs got off to a hot start, jumping out to an early lead and taking a seven point, 39-32 advantage into the break at half. Daytona stormed back after the break, but FSW held them off late to come away with a 77-74 win, their first over a ranked opponent in program history.
It was a struggle on both sides offensively with the Bucs shooting 39% in the win and holding Daytona to just 34% from the field on the night. Tremell Murphy led FSW with 19 points and 9 rebounds while twin brother Anthony Murphy chipped in 14.
The Bucs went on to a 26-7 record in their rookie season, posting an impressive 10-2 mark to tie for the top spot in the Suncoast Conference standings. They advanced to the FCSAA State Tournament where they dropped a heartbreaking matchup with Northwest Florida State, who eventually advanced to the Final Four of the NJCAA National Tournament weeks later.
