SANFORD, Fla.- The #11 Florida SouthWestern Buccaneers two games against the Seminole State Raiders couldn't have gone much differently Saturday afternoon in Sanford. In game one the Bucs were shutout, mustering just two hits in a 4-0 loss before waking up the bats for an 11-1 run rule win in game two to split the twinbill and clinch the series win.
The 1st inning was a sign of things to come in game one for the Bucs as they went down in order in the top of the inning and a leadoff walk turned into a run in the bottom of the frame to give Seminole a quick 1-0 lead.
The Bucs went quietly in the 2nd and 3rd and couldn't do anything with a 4th inning leadoff single, their first of the game, as they remained down 1-0 midway through the contest.
The Bucs were their own worst enemy in the bottom of the 4th as a walk and a hit batter after a leadoff double for the Raiders loaded the bases with nobody out. A pair of passed balls from there allowed two runs to score and another double made it 4-0 Seminole at the end of four.
The Bucs offense never threatened from there, managing just a 6th inning single around 1-2-3 frames in the 5th and 7th as they went down without a fight 4-0 in the opener.
There were just seven hits in the contest, five for Seminole and two for FSW. Anthony Wilkie suffered the loss on the mound, allowing three hits and three runs in three innings of work to fall to 7-4 on the year.
#11 FLORIDA SOUTHWESTERN/SEMINOLE ST. GAME ONE BOX SCORE
The Bucs got off to a much better start in game two as Nick April-Gath singled to lead off the game and Bishop Quarles doubled to move him to third before Jonah St. Antoine knocked him in with a groundout on the infield to give FSW an early 1-0 lead.
The bottom of the 1st was interesting to say the least as not a single ball was put in play by the Raiders despite three runners reaching base. The inning started with a strikeout followed by a walk. Bucs catcher Greg Caban then threw out a runner trying to steal for the second out of the inning before back to back walks once again gave the Raiders hope. It looked like they might load the bases with another walk, but on a 3-1 pitch Caban gunned down another runner at second to end a wild inning with FSW leading 1-0
The 2nd was a similar frame as the Bucs added a run on an RBI single from Andy Perez and worked around three more walks in the bottom half of the inning to keep the Raiders off the board and take a 2-0 lead after two.
The Bucs doubled their lead in the 4th as Caban laced a two run single back up the middle to make it 4-0 and Parker Burgess worked a 1-2-3 bottom of the inning on the mound for FSW with a pair of strikeouts to keep it that way as the teams went to the 5th.
FSW mounted a two out rally in the 5th to add to their lead as three straight run scoring knocks from Aiden Talarico, Robbie Demetree, and Tyler June opened their lead to 7-0 and two batters later Keenan Jabeth launched his third home run of the series to blow it open to 10-0 midway through.
The Bucs looked like they were going to be headed home after five as they led by the needed 10 runs for the run rule and picked up two quick outs in the bottom of the 5th, but a hit batter and a walk gave Seminole some hope and the Raiders took advantage with an RBI single while down to their last strike to keep the game going at 10-1.
Talarico knocked home a run for the second straight inning in the FSW 6th and Sterling Bass came in out of the Bucs bullpen to put things in the books with a 1-2-3 bottom half of the inning as FSW took game two of the doubleheader 11-1 in run rule fashion to clinch the series victory.
June was a perfect 3-3 at the dish with three runs scored while Talarico was 2-4 with a pair of RBIs. Burgess earned the win on the mound with his third straight scoreless outing, going four innings without allowing a hit while striking out five to improve to 2-1 on the year.
