As a freshman, Florida SouthWestern's Keon Ellis had to bide his time, playing behind First Team All-Conference guards and eventual Power 5 signees in Charles Manning Jr. and Maddox Daniels. His role changed significantly as a sophomore as he stepped into the limelight of being the Bucs' bonafide star and it was never more evident than in FSW's Suncoast Conference opener in 2020 when he brought us our #3 moment on our countdown of the Top 10 Moments in FSW Athletics in 2019-20, his record breaking 41 point performance against St. Petersburg.

One thing they haven't had to do much is play from behind, and that is exactly what they had to do for 20 minutes Wednesday night as a determined Polk State squad came in looking to dethrone the Bucs from both the top of the Suncoast and NJCAA standings. In a rarely seen opening weekend top five matchup, the #3 Florida SouthWestern State Buccaneers hosted the #5 Eastern Florida State Titans Saturday night in Suncoast Credit Union Arena. After a slow start, the Bucs took control late in the first half and never looked back, bringing home a 72-60 victory that could hold major implications later this season.
There were some new faces on the court Friday night as the #3 Florida SouthWestern Buccaneers kicked off their 2019-2020 season against the Broward Seahawks. Afterall, FSW had to replace seven sophomores, five of those Division I signees, and three of them Power 5 competitors. But through the changes, one thing remained, FSW’s dominance of opening night as the Bucs handled the visiting Seahawks 80-63 in front of a crowd of more than 1,000 to claim their fourth win to begin a season in their fourth season of action.
The Florida SouthWestern State Buccaneers will again be the hunted in 2019-20 as the Bucs will open the season as the #3 ranked team in the country as released by the NJCAA National Office on Monday.
With basketball fans itching for news during the final dog days of summer, some good news arrived for the Florida SouthWestern State Men’s Basketball team on Friday as the Buccaneers were ranked 4th in Street & Smith’s Preseason Juco Report and FSW sophomore guard Keon Ellis was named to the 2020 Preseason Super Soph Second Team.
