FORT MYERS, Fla.- The Florida SouthWestern Buccaneers put on a shooting clinic at Suncoast Credit Union Arena on Friday, hitting on 55% of their shots on the night while five different players scored in double figures as the Bucs got past the visiting Elgin Spartans 95-82 to improve to 4-1 on the year.
Things didn't start well for the Bucs as Elgin came out flying around, jumping out to an 18-9 lead just five minutes into the ballgame. An old fashioned three point play by Jeremy Innocent got FSW headed in the right direction and a pair of threes from Mason Blazer and Kenyon Giles gave the Bucs their first lead of the game at 36-35 with 6:47 to go in the half. Giles dished out a pair of assists and then scored himself to keep the Bucs in front 44-43 and at the end of 20 minutes of action it was FSW leading Elgin in a shootout 53-51.
Giles hit a triple and then found Roman Cummings for an easy two to stretch the Bucs lead to six early in the second half and a steal by Marcus Kelley led to a slam by Innocent on the other end to give FSW a 71-63 lead with 13:49 to go. The Bucs kept the Spartans at arm's length the rest of the night as Stephen Okoro got an offensive rebound and put it back in to make it 89-74 FSW before the Bucs outlasted Elgin 95-82 at the final horn.
The Bucs shot 55% from the field in the win with five different players scoring in double figures. Blazer led the way for the second straight night with 21 while Innocent and Giles each posted double-doubles, Innocent with 18 points and 10 rebounds and Giles 18 points and 13 assists, the most by a Buc since Jordan Mitchell's program record 17 in February of 2022.
FSW improves to 4-1 on the year with their third straight victory while Elgin falls to 6-3.
The Bucs have a week off before taking the floor again after Thanksgiving when they head to Miami to take part in the Jim Cox Classic Friday, Saturday, and Sunday in South Beach.
