FORT MYERS, Fla.- Florida SouthWestern's Kenyon Giles didn't start the Bucs game Wednesday night against the visiting Eastern Florida Titans, but he certainly finished it, pouring in a season high 29 points and connecting on seven three pointers as FSW erased an early deficit for an entertaining 97-82 Citrus Conference victory over the Titans.
The Bucs got off to a slow start, falling behind 10-5 and then 17-9 eight minutes into the contest. Mason Blazer hit a three for FSW out of the under 12:00 media timeout and it got the Bucs rolling in the right direction as Tyler Bey tied the game at 21 with a lay in through traffic with 8:09 to go in the half and a two handed slam from Roman Cummings put the Bucs up five moments later at 30-25. With the ball rolling downhill for FSW, they padded their lead to 15 on a three from Giles and capped a 18-0 run with a three point play from Bey to make it 43-25. After the slow start, it was all FSW at the break as the Bucs closed the half on a 36-11 run to take a 45-28 lead at the half.
Eastern got the first two buckets of the second half to make it a 13 point game, and the Bucs and Titans played even over the next six minutes as FSW continued to lead it by a baker's dozen, 56-43 with 13:47 to go in the ballgame. Amont'e Allen-Johnson drilled a pull up to give the Bucs some breathing room but another burst from the Titans had Eastern back to within single digits for the first time in the second half at 62-53. Three straight FSW threes from Files and Allen-Johnson pushed the Bucs lead back to 15 and Eastern never threatened again. Both teams continued to connect at a high rate over the final seven minutes of the contest with the Bucs finishing off the Titans 97-82 at the final horn.
The Bucs shot 55% from the field in the win and connected on a blazing 13 for 26 from three point land. Giles led the way with a season high 29 while going 9-17 from the field and 7-12 from deep. Allen-Johnson added 17 on 7 of 8 shooting while Bey, Blazer, and Cummings all joined the duo in double figures.
FSW moves into second place in the conference standings as they improve to 13-5 overall and 3-1 in Citrus Conference action. Eastern Florida falls for the third time in four conference contests and drops to 12-6 overall on the year.
The Bucs are back in action on Saturday in a big early season matchup when they travel to Daytona to take on the 9th ranked Falcons in a 4 PM tip from the Surf Coast.
