The #11 Chipola Lady Indians got some revenge on the #2 Florida SouthWestern Buccaneers Saturday morning in the Visit Dothan Invitational in Alabama, hitting a walk off home run in the bottom of the 8th inning to defeat the Bucs 2-1 in a rematch of the 2025 FCSAA Championship Game the Bucs won to advance to the NJCAA World Series.
DOTHAN, Ala.- The #11 Chipola Lady Indians got some revenge on the #2 Florida SouthWestern Buccaneers Saturday morning in the Visit Dothan Invitational in Alabama, hitting a walk off home run in the bottom of the 8th inning to defeat the Bucs 2-1 in a rematch of the 2025 FCSAA Championship Game the Bucs won to advance to the NJCAA World Series.
It was a pitcher's dual early on as the Bucs Zoe Yzaguirre went toe to toe with Chipola's Lauren Grantham. Yzaguirre struck out five straight to close the 1st and sail through the 2nd, but the Bucs couldn't get anything going with the bats as the game remained scoreless through two.
The first real scoring chance of the game belonged to Chipola in the 4th as they put two on with two out before Yzaguirre dialed up a three pitch strikeout to get out of the jam and keep things scoreless.
The Bucs broke the ice in the top of the 5th as Giorgiana Woods cracked a solo home run to center to lead off the inning, giving FSW the games first lead at 1-0.
FSW had a chance to add on in the 6th as the first two hitters of the inning reached base and a fly ball to right moved both runners into scoring position with one out. They couldn't get anything done from there though as back to back line outs ended the threat and kept it a 1-0 game.
The failure to add insurance immediately bit the Bucs as Chipola hit a solo home run in the bottom of the inning to tie the score at 1.
The Bucs had another scoring opportunity in the 7th as Kaitlyn Klismith earned a pinch hit walk to start the inning and moved to second on a wild pitch to put her in scoring position with nobody out. But just like in the 6th, the Bucs would leave her stranded as a pair of strikeouts and a groundout ended the inning with her 60 feet from home as the game remained tied 1-1.
Yzaguirre mowed through the Indian lineup in the 7th to keep things tied and send the game to extras.
Noelani Livingstone singled back up the middle to begin the FSW 8th and moved into scoring position on a sac bunt, but for the third straight inning, the Bucs couldn't get the big hit and she remained stranded at inning's end.
After two quick outs in the bottom of the 8th Chipola called game, getting a solo homer to center to walk off the Bucs 2-1, handing FSW rare losses on back to back days.
The Bucs outhit the Indians 5-4, but half Chipola's hits left the yard which proved the difference. Yzaguirre went the distance in the circle, allowing just the four hits and two runs while striking out 12 and suffered the tough luck loss to fall to 3-1 on the year.
FSW falls to 6-2 on the year with the loss while Chipola improves to 4-6.
The Bucs will open their home schedule this week at Buccaneers Park and Lee Health Complex as they host the Paradise Cove Classic in Fort Myers. FSW will open tournament play Wednesday when they host Spoon River from Illinois for two at Bucs Park beginning at 1 PM.
