FORT MYERS, Fla.- The #4 Florida SouthWestern Buccaneers used lights out pitching and timely hitting for a key Citrus Conference sweep over #6 Santa Fe Saturday afternoon at Buccaneers Park in Fort Myers.
Game one saw the Saints crack the scoreboard first as they loaded the bases with two outs before shooting a single through the hole on the right side to take a 1-0 lead. It looked like they had more coming but Abbie Shellabarger backhanded a ball back up the middle and stepped on the bag to avert further damage and keep it a one run game after an inning and a half.
Mikan Nishiya singled up the middle for the Bucs to drive home a run and tie the score in the bottom of the 2nd and Thaima Maximiliana followed suit to put the Bucs in front. Later in the inning a defensive miscue from the Saints allowed the Bucs fourth run of the inning to score and Bente Zwanenburg slapped a single the other way to drive home another to give FSW a five run inning and a 5-1 lead after two.
Leadoff walks in the 3rd and 4th came back to hurt the Bucs as Santa Fe put single runs on the board to make it a two run game at 5-3 at the end of four.
The Bucs turned to their ace out of the bullpen from there as Zoe Yzaguirre entered in relief and worked two perfect innings to nail down the save and give FSW a 5-3 win in the opener.
The Bucs banged out 10 hits in the win with seven different starters getting in on the action. Maximiliana went 2-3 with a run scored and an RBI while Lizzy Kwakernaak impacted the game on both ends, going 2-4 at the plate and also earning the win in the circle with five strong innings to improve to 6-2 on the year.
#4 FLORIDA SOUTHWESTERN/#6 SANTA FE GAME ONE BOX SCORE
Both teams pushed a run across in the 1st inning of game two as Santa Fe took a 1-0 lead thanks in part to an FSW error in the top half of the inning before the Bucs answered with one in the bottom on an RBI single from Giorgiana Woods to make it 1-1 at the end of one.
The Bucs took their first lead of the game in the 3rd as Noelani Livingstone doubled with one out and scored on a Santa Fe error to put FSW in front 2-1.
It was all pitching from there. For the second straight game FSW went to Yzaguirre out of the pen and also for the second straight game, the Saints couldn't sniff the Bucs ace. She struck out two in a 1-2-3 4th and punched another hitter out to close out a 1-2-3 top of the 5th to keep it a 2-1 game.
The Bucs had a chance to add some insurance in the bottom of the 5th as they put runners on second and third with one out, but one runner was cut down at the plate on a ground ball and the second was thrown out trying to steal to bring the threat and the inning to close with FSW continuing to cling to a 2-1 lead.
Lucky for the Bucs, Yzaguirre didn't need any insurance, retiring the Saints in order for the third straight inning in the 6th before getting a double play to finish things off in the 7th as FSW hung on to take game two 2-1 to complete the sweep.
Livingstone had half of the Bucs six hits and both of their runs scored, going a perfect 3-3 with a pair of doubles in the win. Woods started in the circle and went three solid innings without allowing an earned run before turning it over to Yzaguirre who threw four shutout frames, striking out four to pick up the win and improve to 11-2 on the year.
