Jakubuwski's Walk Off Highlights Bucs Sweep of Polk
The #2 Florida SouthWestern Buccaneers extended their season long win streak to 16 games Saturday with a pair of wins over Polk State. In game one, the Bucs trailed until the final pitch, when Makayla Jakubuwski ripped a two run walk off single to right to win 4-3 before hammering the Eagles 8-1 in game two to complete the sweep.
FORT MYERS, Fla.- The #2 Florida SouthWestern Buccaneers extended their season long win streak to 16 games Saturday with a pair of wins over Polk State. In game one, the Bucs trailed until the final pitch, when Makayla Jakubuwski ripped a two run walk off single to right to win 4-3 before hammering the Eagles 8-1 in game two to complete the sweep.
One of just three teams to beat the Bucs in Citrus Conference play this season, the Eagles put FSW on notice again early in game one of the doubleheader as they cracked a two run home run off the flag pole in left center in the top of the 2nd to take an early 2-0 lead.
The Bucs answered back in the bottom half as Stephanie Basso banged a double off the wall in center to drive home a run and cut the Polk lead in half at 2-1.
Bucs starter Charlotte Graham fired 1-2-3 frmes in the 3rd and 4th to keep it a 2-1 game but the FSW offense couldn't find a way to draw even as it remained a one run game in favor of the Eagles at the end of four.
With two on and nobody out in the top of the 5th, back to back doubles for the Eagles padded their lead to 3-1.
The Bucs used some small ball in the bottom of the 5th to answer back, pushing two runners into scoring position on bunts before a sacrifice fly from Giorgiana Woods brought home a run to make it a one run game once again at 3-2.
FSW had a golden opportunity to tie things up as they put runners on second and third with just one out in the bottom of the 6th, but a lineout and a strikeout ended their threat and kept Polk in front 3-2 as the teams went to the 7th.
Graham gave the Bucs a chance with a 1-2-3 top of the 7th on just six pitches to set up the drama in the bottom of the inning.
Lizzy Kwakernaak got the Bucs going, drawing a one out walk after a long at bat to put the tying run on base. Milla Durnell flared a single to right to put runners on first and second and a fly ball to center moved both runners up 60 feet and into scoring position with two outs. That brought up the red hot Makayla Jakubuwski who entered the game after All-American Noelani Livingstone was injured on a slide early in the game. After working her way ahead in the count, Jakubuwski got just enough of a 2-1 pitch to sneak it by the Eagle infield and into right field, bringing both runners home and giving FSW a walk off winner.
The Bucs outhit the Eagles 9-3 in the contest with Emma-Rose Payette leading the way with a 3-3 ballgame while Jakubuwski was 2-3 with the game tying and game winning RBIs off the FSW bench. Graham went the distance in the circle, earning the win to improve to 10-1 on the year, allowing just three hits while striking out six.
#2 FLORIDA SOUTHWESTERN/POLK STATE GAME ONE BOX SCORE
For the second straight game, it was a big early swing by the Eagles to give Polk the game's first lead as a leadoff single and a one out double put Polk on the board in the 1st and gave the Eagles a 1-0 advantage after a half inning of play.
The Bucs answered right back, taking advantage of an extra out given to them by the Eagles as Basso cracked an RBI double to the wall in left center before Jakubuwski and Bente Zwanenburg ripped back to back RBI singles to give FSW a 3-1 lead at the end of one.
Kwakernaak kept things right there in the circle for the Bucs, retiring eight straight from the 2nd to the 4th to keep FSW in front 3-1.
In the 5th she got it done with her bat, leading off the inning with a single to get things started before coming around to score on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Payette to make it 4-1. Later in the inning Basso found a hole on the left side for a two out RBI knock to up the Bucs lead to 5-1 at the end of five.
The Bucs put the game away in the 6th as Megan Veilleux smacked a two run, pinch hit single back up the middle to make it 7-1 and Thaima Maximiliana lifted the Bucs third sac fly of the game to the gap to score her later in the inning to bump the lead to 8-1.
Woods came in out of the FSW bullpen to finish things off from there, working a 1-2-3 top of the 7th to put the final touches on an 8-1 win for the Bucs to complete the sweep.
Kwakernaak was the star both in the circle and at the plate for the Bucs, going six innings and allowing just three hits and one run in the circle while striking out six to earn her eighth win of the year while helping herself out at the dish with a 2-2 effort while also scoring a run. Basso had two hits, including the Bucs only extra base hit of the game with a double and drove in two to pace the offense.
#2 FLORIDA SOUTHWESTERN/POLK STATE GAME TWO BOX SCORE
FSW run their season long winning streak to 16 games as they improve to 41-5 overall and 27-3 in Citrus Conference play where they take a commanding five game lead atop the league standings with 10 games left to go. Polk drops their fifth and sixth straight as they fall to 18-28 overall and 10-20 in conference action.
The Bucs will be back in action on Tuesday at home at Buccaneers Park in Fort Myers when they host #10 Indian River in a doubleheader featuring four of the last five NJCAA National Champions.
