The #9 Florida SouthWestern State Buccaneers were the new kids on the block Thursday at the 2019 Women’s National Invitational Tournament in Midland, Texas as they took on the 7-0 Hill Rebels. The Bucs, in just their fourth year of existence, were participating in the 10th annual tournament for the first time with the likes of perennial national powers Trinity Valley, Seward County, Salt Lake, and Midland. The #8 Florida SouthWestern State Buccaneers continued their challenging early season schedule this weekend as they took part in the Visit Panama City Classic Tournament in the Florida Panhandle. The Bucs came out like gangbusters on Friday, putting it to #21 Georgia Highlands to the tune of a 97-68 victory to advance to the tournament championship game. Saturday they got what they wanted, a rematch against #1 ranked Gulf Coast State and in a near mirror image of their contest a week ago against the Commodores, FSW controlled the pace most of the game before falling late 64-62 to drop to 2-2 on the year.
The #8 Florida SouthWestern State Buccaneers were the best team on the floor for nearly all of the 40 minutes of regulation in their top 10 matchup with the #1 ranked and defending National Champion Gulf Coast State Commodores Saturday afternoon in Suncoast Credit Union Arena. The Bucs led for 37:30 of regulation and were tied for a total of 2:30, but a late desperation three for Gulf Coast banked in to send the game to overtime where the Commodores dominated, outscoring FSW 16-8 in the extra period to capture a 97-89 victory.
Following their first trip to the NJCAA National Tournament last Spring, the Florida SouthWestern State Buccaneers will start the 2019-2020 season ranked #8 in the nation, as released by the NJCAA National Office on Monday.
