FORT MYERS, Fla.- Over the next two weeks we will relive the top 10 moments of the 2019-2020 FSW Athletics year. Today, we kick the countdown off at #10 with another kick off of sorts, the first FSW Volleyball match in program history.
A project 18 months in the making came to fruition on August 19th when the Buccaneer Volleyball team took the floor for the first time in program history, taking on Ave Maria in exhibition action. The young team, comprised of 12 freshmen and just two sophomore transfers showed few nerves in front of a big and boisterous home crowd in Suncoast Credit Union Arena. FSW came out on fire, taking it to the Gyrenes to the tune of a 25-13 first set victory while hitting .414 as a team in the stanza. They repeated the act in the second, again coasting to a 25-13 victory to take a 2-0 lead in the match. The third set was a little bit closer, but not much, as the Bucs again had their way with the much more veteran Ave Maria squad, taking it 25-15 to complete the sweep and begin the new era of FSW Volleyball with a bang.
The Bucs went on to have a highly successful rookie year, going 16-8 overall and 4-2 in Suncoast Conference play. The new kids on the block earned their way to the FCSAA State Tournament for the first time where they won a pair of matches and finished fourth, falling just one win short of reaching the District Tournament in their first year of play.
