Makinen Earns Second Straight FCSAA Setter of the Week Nod
For the second time in as many weeks to open the 2025 Volleyball season, Florida SouthWestern sophomore setter Irina Makinen has been named the FCSAA Setter of the Week as announced by the State office on Tuesday.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla.- For the second time in as many weeks to open the 2025 Volleyball season, Florida SouthWestern sophomore setter Irina Makinen has been named the FCSAA Setter of the Week as announced by the State office on Tuesday.
Makinen led the Bucs to a 3-1 week at the Crystal 'Inn'Vitational Tournament in Salt Lake City last weekend while averaging 8.93 assists per set. Friday against Southern Idaho she recorded her second career double-double, dishing out a career high 43 assists while tying her career high with 10 digs in a tough five set loss to the Golden Eagles. Later that night she put up big numbers again, topping the 40 assist mark for the second straight game while also recording a career high 6 kills in a 3-1 Buccaneer win over Salt Lake. Saturday she led the Bucs to a pair of sweeps, first notching 17 assists in a 3-0 win over Southern Nevada before distributing 34 helpers in a win over #16 Western Nebraska to finish off the weekend.
Makinen currently leads Region VIII and ranks 8th at the NJCAA Division I level averaging 9.52 assists per set on the season.
Makinen was joined in the weekly FCSAA award winners by teammate Aleksandra Lucic who was named the FCSAA Defensive Player of the Week for week two.
Makinen and the Bucs are back in action this weekend at the Titan Invitational in Melbourne where they will see some new faces with their first all-time meetings with Andrew, USC Lancaster, and #4 Weatherford, as well as a date with Jefferson from Missouri.
