Blazer Leads Bucs Past Mustangs in High Flying Battle
Mason Blazer tied a program single game record with eight three pointers made in route to a 31 point performance Thursday night to lead the Florida SouthWestern State Buccaneers over the Monroe Mustangs 90-82 in Suncoast Credit Union Arena.
FORT MYERS, Fla.- Mason Blazer tied a program single game record with eight three pointers made in route to a 31 point performance Thursday night to lead the Florida SouthWestern State Buccaneers over the Monroe Mustangs 90-82 in Suncoast Credit Union Arena.
The Bucs got off to a bit of a slow start as Monroe jumped out to an 11-5 lead four minutes in to begin the ballgame. The Bucs found some momentum midway through the period, tying the score and then taking an 18-16 lead on a big slam by Jeremy Innocent. A three from Mason Blazer pushed the lead to five and another triple put the Bucs up 29-23. The teams traded baskets over the next six minutes with FSW heading to the locker rooms at the half leading it 41-35.
Blazer continued his red hot night with a three out of the break to pad the Bucs lead to nine and his sixth three of the game gave FSW a 49-35 lead with just under 17:00 to go in the contest. An 8-0 run got the Mustangs back into the game and with 12:22 to go it was just a five point game at 55-50 in favor of FSW. Blazer continued to stroke it from deep with another three with 7:25 to go to put the Bucs up 68-58 and Abdoulaye Konate did the same moments later to push the lead to a dozen with 4:30 remaining. The Bucs went scoreless over a 1:41 stretch to give the Mustangs one last push as they trimmed the Bucs lead to five at 80-75, but Monroe ran out of time to complete their comeback as FSW closed them out 90-82 to win their opening game of the 2025 FSW Classic.
Blazer was the story, tying an FSW single game record with 8 three pointers made while pouring in 31 points on the night. Kenyon Giles added 17 while Konate also reached double figures with 10.
The Bucs improve to 3-1 on the year with the win while Monroe falls back to .500 at 3-3 .
Both teams will be back in action on Friday as Monroe takes on Miami Dade and the Bucs host Elgin from Illinois in a 7 PM tip from Suncoast Arena.
