FORT MYERS, Fla.- The State Championship rematch battle between #2 Central Florida and #3 Florida SouthWestern lived up to its billing at City of Palms Park in Downtown Fort Myers in late February. Game one of the doubleheader came down to the final pitch, which is what brings us to our #1 moment on our list of the Top 10 Moments of the 2019-20 FSW Athletics Year, Lindsey Corbin's walk off grand slam.
As expected, there was lots of scoring early in the battle between two of the top offensive teams in the country. Central got on the board right off the bat in the 1st to jump out to a 1-0 lead and FSW answered in the second with a four spot to take a 4-1 lead.
The Patriots pushed a run across in the 4th to cut the Bucs lead to 4-2, but FSW got that run back in the bottom half of the inning to push their lead back to three at 5-2.
Central pulled back even with three in the 5th to make it 5-5, but a three run home run by Natavia Ellis in the Bucs next chance made it an 8-5 game after five complete.
The Bucs looked like they had the game in the bag, leading 8-5 with two outs and nobody on in the 7th, but Central wasn't done yet, getting a single and a hit batter to flip the lineup over and then three more singles to tie the score at 8.
FSW had some two out magic of their own up their sleeves as Owen Bowers singled, Lexi Moore walked, and Rebeca Laudino chopped an infield single to load the bases for Lindsey Corbin. Corbin had the opportunity every kid dreams of growing up. Bases loaded, two outs, bottom of the 7th, tie score, and you are at the plate. She did how most of those dreams end, crushing a 1-1 pitch flying over the wall in right center field for a grand slam, sending the FSW dugout into the frenzy as the Bucs walked off the Patriots 12-8.
