Bucs Sweep Week One FCSAA Player of the Week Awards
With week one of the 2025 NJCAA Volleyball season in the books, three Florida SouthWestern Buccaneers have some extra hardware in their trophy cases as the FCSAA named Sara Gamboa the Player of the Week, Irina Makinen the Setter of the Week, and Sarah Webb as the Defensive Player of the Week.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla.- With week one of the 2025 NJCAA Volleyball season in the books, three Florida SouthWestern Buccaneers have some extra hardware in their trophy cases as the FCSAA named Sara Gamboa the Player of the Week, Irina Makinen the Setter of the Week, and Sarah Webb as the Defensive Player of the Week.
Gamboa was named the Player of the Week after a monster weekend, earning MVP honors at the Battle of the Beach Tournament in Fort Myers, averaging 4.33 kills and 2.08 digs per set. She had double figure kills in all four matches, collecting 12 in the Bucs sweep of Southern Idaho in their opener, 14 in a 3-0 win over #5 Utah State-Eastern, 11 against Snow, and a season high 15 against her former squad, Trinity Valley, in the defacto Tournament Championship match.
Makinen picked up Setter of the Week honors after dishing out 10.25 assists per set in four Buccaneer wins. She set a new career high with 33 assists in FSW's season opening win over Southern Idaho and matched that number in the Bucs second win of the day Friday against #5 Utah State- Eastern. Saturday she added 23 more as the Bucs swept past Snow and she closed the weekend out in style with a new career high 34 assists as FSW captured the Tournament Championship with a sweep of #10 Trinity Valley.
Webb earned her first Defensive Player of the Week nod of her career after scooping up 4.58 digs on the weekend for the Bucs. She had 10 or more digs in all four matches in the Battle at the Beach to earn All-Tournament Team honors. Friday she put up a career high 17 digs in her first career start and backed that up with 14 in FSW's sweep of #5 Utah State-Eastern. She also went perfect in 18 receptions on Friday. Saturday she was at it again, anchoring the Bucs backline with 10 digs in their win over Snow and 14 in a sweep of #10 Trinity Valley.
The top ranked Bucs are back in action this weekend when they travel West to the Rocky Mountains to take part in the Crystal InnVitational hosted by Salt Lake Community College. FSW will take on Southern Idaho and Salt Lake Thursday before battling Southern Nevada Friday and Western Nebraska on Saturday.
