Top Ranked Bucs Roll to Eighth Straight Sweep
The #1 Florida SouthWestern State Buccaneers rolled to their eighth consecutive win via sweep on Wednesday, dismantling the Santa Fe Saints in Citrus Conference play to improve to 13-1 on the year.
GAINESVILLE, Fla.- The #1 Florida SouthWestern State Buccaneers rolled to their eighth consecutive win via sweep on Wednesday, dismantling the Santa Fe Saints in Citrus Conference play to improve to 13-1 on the year.
The Bucs wasted little time in taking control in the first, jumping out to an early 11-4 lead before stretching it out to a 10 point game at 17-7 on a kill from Magi Milicevic. They continue to push, eventually finishing off the Saints 25-12 on an ace from Giovanna Rocha to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
The second followed just about the same script, as again it was all FSW from the jump as the Bucs raced out to a 10-4 lead to begin the set before the lead quickly grew to double figures at 18-7 following a big stuff from Aleksandra Lucic. The teams traded point from there, but it was too little too late for the Saints as FSW grabbed a 2-0 lead in the match with a 25-13 win.
It was more of the same in the third as the Bucs multi-faceted attack was just too much for Santa Fe. The Bucs grabbed control early and never relented, taking the set 25-14 to wrap up the sweep in a swift 1:07.
The Bucs hit .398 as a team in the win with 41 kills in the three setter. Sara Gamboa led the way with 11 kills on 17 swings while Irina Makinen dished out 32 assists for FSW. Lucic contributed on both sides of the net with 6 kills and a .750 hitting mark while also leading FSW with a match high 5 blocks.
FSW picks up their ninth consecutive win and their eighth straight via sweep to improve to 13-1 overall and 2-0 in Citrus Conference play while Santa Fe falls to 8-5 overall and 0-2 in league play.
The Bucs have their first round bye on Saturday and won't take the court again until Wednesday, September 24th when they host Polk State on Family Night in Suncoast Arena. All FSW students and staff as well as their families will receive up to four free tickets at the arena box office.
